Double Crochet Scarf Pattern
If you’re looking for a fun and easy crochet project, this double crochet scarf is just right. It uses a stitch called the drunken granny stitch.
Don’t worry—it’s not hard! It’s just a fun way to mix up the usual granny stitch and give your scarf a cool, lacey and wavy look.
This pattern is great for beginners. If you know how to do a double crochet, you can make this scarf.
The steps are easy to remember, because it is a one row repeat pattern and after a few rows, you’ll be crocheting without even looking at the pattern!
You can use any yarn you have at home, depending on the look and feel you are after. You could make it in worsted weight yarn (like #4 medium) to make a scarf soft and warm without being too heavy.
Make it in light weight yarn (like #3 light worsted yarn) for a light and airy scarf for cool spring nights.
Or, make it in super bulky yarn for a warm and cozy winter scarf.
Play around with colors—try stripes, one solid color, or variegated yarn that changes color by itself.
This scarf makes a great gift, or you can keep it for yourself. It’s warm, soft, and looks fancy even though it’s very easy to make.
Why You Will Love This Crochet Scarf

- Fast to Make: You’ll finish it in no time, it can be done in a day or two depending on how fast you crochet.
- Looks Fancy: The drunken granny stitch gives a nice lacey and bumpy texture.
- Reversable: This crochet scarf looks great on both sides.
- Use Any Yarn: Great for using up yarn scraps.
- Make It Your Way: Change the size or colors to match your style.
- Perfect for Gifts: A handmade scarf is always a thoughtful gift.
Yarn and Hook Used
We used a variegated #3 light-worsted weight yarn (DK, 8ply), with about 15 wraps per inch. The recommended crochet hook size for the yarn was 4mm however, we opted to go up two sizes to a 6mm hook, to give the scarf a softer look and feel.
About the Stitch Pattern
For this scarf pattern we worked the drunken granny stitch over a multiple of 6 chain stitches plus, 3 extra chains for the turning chain on the foundation row.
Normally this stitch pattern is worked over multiples of 5, however the extra stitch in each multiple, along with the larger hook size gives the finished scarf a lighter, and softer look and feel.
How it works – After making a foundation chain and row, you work clusters of 4 double crochets, chain 2, and 1 double crochet in the same space.
You keep repeating this pattern until you reach your desired length.
The scarf is then finished with a simple scalloped edging made with single crochet, half double and double crochet stitches.
Expert Tip
If you are new to crochet you might find it helpful to place a stitch marker in every sixth stitch as you crochet the foundation chain. Then when making the first row you work the cluster groups in these marked stitches.

Expert Tip
Missed a chain 2 and double crochet space – If you missed a chain 2 and double crochet space in the previous round, you can either pull your work out to the mistake to correct it.
Or, continue to crochet and work the stitches into the space between the first and second double crochet stitches on the row, and move on.
