Looking for a fun and quirky project? This crochet pickle pattern is quick, easy, and sure to make people smile!

Small or big it works up fast, and is a great way to use up scrap yarn.

Whether you make it as a joke gift, a keychain, or just because you love pickles, this project is full of personality.

Perfect for someone who want something simple and fun. Let’s stitch up a pickle together!

Crochet pickles.

Crocheting food is always fun, and this crochet pickle is no exception! It’s silly, cute, and super easy to make.

You only need a little yarn and some basic stitches, so it’s a great project for beginners or anyone who wants a quick crochet win.

This pickle is worked in the round to create a tube shape, then stuffed to give it that plump pickle look.

You can keep it plain or add little details, like a funny face. It’s about the size of a real pickle, but you can make it bigger or smaller depending on the yarn and hook you use.

This makes a great gift for pickle lovers, a funny stocking stuffer, or even a cute keychain if you add a loop.

It’s also a fun way to decorate a kitchen or make people laugh. Quick, quirky, and beginner-friendly—this pickle is sure to be a hit!

Things To Note:

  • Beginner-Friendly - Uses simple stitches in the round.
  • Scrap Yarn Friendly - Great way to use leftover green yarn.
  • Fun Gift Idea - Perfect for pickle lovers or as a joke gift.
  • Customizable - Add a face, keychain loop, or change the size.
  • Conversation Starter - It’s a crochet pickle—what’s not to love?
  • Great Stocking Stuffer or Party Favor - A small, silly gift that will make anyone laugh.
  • Yarn color - You can crochet this pattern in any color you like. However, we feel that some shades of green are better. Our number one choice is an olive color, the next being grass green or dark green.

How To Use

  • Make these in #4 worsted, #5 chunky or thicker yarn, and make a huggable emotional support crochet pickle.
  • Make small crochet pickles in #2 sports or #3 Dk yarn, and don't add the facial features, add these to other crochet vegetables in a bowl, or stuff them into pickle jars for a unique home decor idea or gift.
  • Crochet small pickles and turn them into keychains or bag tags.
  • Use them as a Christmas tree decoration like in Germany. Whoever finds the Christmas pickle ornament hidden in the tree gets an extra gift or reward.

Materials

Yarn

#3 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) yarn, with about 12 WPI (wraps per inch)*

  • Olive - 49 yards (45 meters)

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - measures yarn thickness by counting how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. More wraps thinner yarn, while fewer wraps thicker yarn.

Hook Size

  • 2.5mm

Notions

  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle
  • 9mm safety eyes
  • Black yarn (mouth) - about 20 inches (50cm)
  • Cream yarn (eyelids) - about 20 inches (50cm)

  • invdec – Insert hk in FLO of next st, then in FLO of next st, YO, pull through 2-lps, YO, pull through 2-lps.
  • FLO - To identify the front loop of a crochet stitch, examine the top of the stitch. Each stitch has two loops: the front loop (the one closest to you) and the back loop (the one furthest away). The front loop is the loop that is in front when you are facing your work.

Finished Size

Small crochet pickle leaning on a flower pot.

The finished size of this crochet pickle is about 5 inches (12.7cm) long when made in the yarn weight and hook size mentioned above.

Gauge

The gauge is not important for this project but making sure the stitches are tight is important.

This prevents the toy stuffing from peeking through. If you notice the filling showing through, consider using a smaller hook size to achieve tighter stitches.

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in a spiral, so do not join the rounds as you go, unless otherwise stated in the pattern.
  • Use a stitch maker to mark the first stitch of each round. This will help you keep track of the start and end of a round.
  • Ensure the pattern stays accurate by counting the stitches in each round.

Attach eyes (optional) - If adding safety eyes to the crochet pickle, fix them between rounds 24 and 25 spacing them 5 stitches apart.

I positioned the first eye by counting back 5 stitches from the last stitch made in round 26, then positioned the second eye 5 stitches to the right of the 1st eye between rounds 24 and 25.

Rnds 27-28 - 1sc in each st. [30sc in each rnd]

Rnd 30 - *1sc in next 2-sts, invdec, rpt from * 6 times. [18sc]

Stuff - firmly fill the body with stuffing.

Rnd 31 - *1sc in next 1-st, invdec, rpt from * 6 times. [12sc]

Rnd 32 - *invdec, rpt from * 6 times. [6sc]

Stalk

Rnd 33 - Ch7, sl st into 2nd ch from hk, sl st into next 5-sts, cut yarn, leave a long tail for sewing, and fasten off.

Thread the yarn tail onto a needle, sew the opening closed, and weave in the end.

Mouth and eyelids - If you have added eyes to the crochet pickle, embroider on a mouth with black yarn.

If you have crocheted the pickle in a dark-colored yarn, and have added all-black eyes, these may not stand out. To emphasize the eyes, embroider eyelids with a line of off-white yarn.

FINISHING

Roll the pickle between your hands to evenly distribute the filling, then slightly bend its body to give it a pickle-like shape.

Variations

  • Classic Pickle - Use green yarn for a traditional look.
  • Silly Pickle - Add safety eyes and a smile for a funny amigurumi toy.
  • Mini Pickle Keychain - Make it smaller and attach to a key ring.
  • Giant Pickle - Use chunky yarn for an oversized pickle plush.
  • Holiday Pickle - Add a red ribbon and turn it into a Christmas ornament.
  • Rainbow Pickle - Just for fun, make it in bright rainbow stripes!
