Make One or Make a Set
You can crochet just one basket for a small storage solution or make all three sizes to create a nesting basket set. The clean square shape makes them easy to stack and store when not in use.
This flexibility makes the pattern great for:
- Personal use
- Gift sets
- Craft fair stock
Perfect for Home Organization
These crochet storage baskets are ideal for keeping small items tidy. Use them in:
- The bathroom for cotton pads or small toiletries
- The bedroom for jewelry or hair accessories
- A desk for clips, notes, or small supplies
- Any space that needs simple, soft storage
They help keep surfaces neat while adding a handmade touch.
Great Scrap Yarn Project
If you have leftover yarn from other projects, this pattern is a great way to use it up. Because the baskets are small, they don’t require large amounts of yarn.
You can also make them in seasonal colors:
- Bright spring shades for Easter
- Red, green, and white for Christmas
- Neutral tones to match your home décor
Mix and match colors to suit any room or season.
Yarn & Hook Tips for Sturdy Baskets
For best results, use a thick or super bulky yarn (about 5 wraps per inch). To help the basket hold its shape, use a crochet hook that is about half the recommended size listed on the yarn label.
For example:
- If the yarn suggests a 9 mm hook
- Use a 4.5 mm hook instead
This creates tighter stitches and ensures the basket sides stay firm without becoming floppy.
Beginner Friendly Pattern
This is a simple crochet basket pattern designed with beginners in mind. The stitches are basic, and the square construction is easy to follow.
It’s a great project for:
- Learning to crochet sturdy items
- Practicing even tension
- Making useful handmade gifts
Great for Gifts & Craft Fairs
These small square crochet baskets make thoughtful handmade gifts for:
- Friends
- Teachers
- Holiday gift exchanges
- Housewarming presents
They’re also a strong seller at craft fairs and markets because they are:
- Practical
- Easy to display
- Affordable
- Customizable in color

- Color B, medium basket – 143 yards (130 meters)
- Color C, large basket – 226 yards (206 meters)
Note: we used 100% acrylic yarn for these small square baskets
*Wraps per inch (WPI) - measures yarn thickness by counting how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. More wraps thinner yarn, while fewer wraps thicker yarn.
Hook Size

- Yarn Needle
Stitches and Abbreviations - US Terms
- BL – back loop – see below
- ch – chain stitch
- cnr – corner
- col - color
- rnd/rnds – round/rounds
- sc- single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- st/sts – stitch/stiches
- [ ] – at the end of a row/round indicates the number of stitches in that row/round
Stitch Notes
- To identify the back loop of a crochet stitch, look at the top of the stitch. Each stitch has two loops: the front loop (the one closest to you) and the back loop (the one furthest away). The back loop is the loop that is behind the front loop when you are facing your work.
Gauge & Finished Size

Finished size
- Small basket, 4 inches (10cm) square and 1.5 inches (4cm) tall
- Medium basket, 5 inches (13cm) square and 1.5 inches (4cm) tall
- Large basket, 6 inches (15cm square and 1.5 inches (4cm) tall
Gauge is not so important for this project, just make sure that the stitches are nice and tight, this will ensure that the baskets sides will be firm and stand up straight.
Pattern Notes
- Do not start the beginning of a round or row with a chain 1 stitch, instead pull the loop up to the height of a single crochet stitch.
- Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
