About This Crochet Mason Jar Cover Pattern

This pattern uses a 3.75mm hook and #2 fine yarn (think sport, baby, or 5ply yarn) that is 100% cotton or a cotton blend, with 16–18 WPI (wraps per inch).

We chose cotton because it’s easy to care for and has a clean, polished look, but you can use other yarn types too. It’s a great way to use up leftover scraps from your stash!

Designed To Fit

This pattern has been designed to fit a lid that is 2.76 inches (7cm) in diameter.

When finished, the crochet lid cover measures approximately 7 inches (17.5cm) in diameter, creating a lovely decorative edge that extends gracefully around the jar.

Adjusting the pattern for a larger Lid

While this pattern is designed to fit standard mason jars or similar-sized jars, it can also be easily adjusted to suit wide-mouth jars.

If you are making this for a jar with a wider opening, we have included helpful tips and instructions in our notes below on how to modify the pattern for a perfect fit.

If you would like to make it fit a slightly larger lid, there are a couple of ways you can adjust it:

  • You can try using a slightly larger hook to make your stitches a bit looser. When you get to round 6, swap the half-double crochet stitches for double crochet stitches to help it stretch a little more.
  • Or, if you have a larger lid, you can add an extra round or two between rounds 5 and 6. Just increase your stitch count, but keep the number even. After that, follow the pattern instructions from rounds 6–9.
  • If you do add those extra rounds, make sure to adjust the number of chains for the drawstring too, so it doesn’t end up too small!

Stitches Used In This Pattern

This pattern uses the PC (popcorn stitch), and picot to create the rosebuds and calyx. If you are unfamiliar with these stitches, you will find step-by-step instructions in the special stitches section below.

Materials

Yarn

#2 fine (sport, baby, 5ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with 16 - 18 wraps per inch (WPI)* wraps per inch in the following colors:

  • Color B, pink: 16.4 yards (15 meters)
  • Color C, white: 32.8 yards (30 meters)

*Wraps per inch (WPI) - measures yarn thickness by counting how many times the yarn wraps around a ruler in one inch. More wraps thinner yarn, while fewer wraps thicker yarn.

Special Stitches

Popcorn Stitch (PC)

  1. Make 5 double crochets into the designated stitch.
  2. Remove the hook from the loop and insert the hook from the front to the back of the first double crochet made.
  3. Then use the hook to pick up the loop from the last double crochet made and pull it through the loop on the hook.
  4. This completes the popcorn stitch.

Picot (picot)

A picot stitch is made using chain stitches and a slip stitch. It can be used as an extension to single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, or treble stitches.

A picot is normally 3 chain stitches, but if you require more definition, make it with 4 chain stitches.

  1. Create three chain stitches at the point where you want to add a picot.
  2. Then insert your hook into the third chain from the hook.
  3. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through both the stitch and the loop on the hook.
  4. This completes one picot stitch.

Finished Size

This crochet mason jar cover is approximately 7 inches (17.5cm) in diameter.

Gauge

After completing rows 1–3, the diameter should measure approximately 2.76 inches (7 cm). If it doesn’t, try adjusting your hook size—switch to a larger hook if it’s too small or a smaller hook if it’s too large—to achieve the correct gauge.

Assembling and Drawstring Tie

Follow the making and assembly instructions in the order as outlined below.

Drawstring tie

Drawstring tie, col A - ch170. When making the chain ensure that you have a long starting and end tail – these will be used for attaching the rosebud and calyx.

A drawstring made up of 170 chain stitches.

Thread the drawstring in the spaces between the stitches of round 6.

Calyx, make 2

Calyx, color A

Into a MR * 1hdc, picot, 1hdc, sl st, into the ring, rpt from * 5 times, ch1, cut yarn fasten off. Pull the starting yarn tail tight then knot the two ends together on the wrong side, weave in the ends, and trim away the excess.

Place the calyx onto the drawstring.

Next, thread one of the yarn tail ends onto a needle. Pass the needle through the center of the magic ring from the right side to the wrong side, going through one calyx piece.

Gently pull the calyx about 2-3 cm onto the drawstring tie, then remove the needle.

Repeat this process on the other end of the drawstring for the second calyx.

Make the rosebud ends

Rosebud, Color B

To make the rosebud, slip stitch the yarn into the loop of the first chain stitch at one end of the drawstring tie. Chain 3 (this does not count as a stitch), then work a popcorn stitch (PC) into the chain space. Chain 1, cut the yarn, and fasten off.

Thread the yarn tail onto a needle and sew the sides of the rosebud together. When you reach the end, knot the starting and ending yarn tails together, then trim any excess yarn.

Attach the Rosebud to the Calyx

Thread the green yarn tail onto a needle and slide the calyx down the drawstring to cover the base of the rosebud. Sew the calyx to the rosebud with the yarn threaded on the needle, then secure the stitches and trim any excess.

Repeat for the other side of the drawstring.

Your rosebud crochet drawstring mason jar lid cover is now ready to use.

Vintage Look: Use a vintage-style yarn, like a muted rose or dusty blue, for a charming, old-fashioned feel.

Add Personalization: For a thoughtful gift, consider adding a small crocheted tag or charm with the recipient’s name or a message.
